Do you think that planning a Squamish elopement might be right for you? Let’s find out! While Squamish was once a little logging town without much draw for passers by, it has become more of a destination in its own right over the last 20 years. With adventurous pursuits and beautiful views around every corner it is not difficult to see why.

Let’s Dig into Why Planning a Squamish Elopement Makes Sense

1. It is close to Vancouver

One of the biggest reasons couples choose a Squamish elopement is how accessible it is without sacrificing that immersed-in-nature feeling. Located roughly halfway between Vancouver and Whistler, Squamish gives you easy access to some of the most breathtaking mountain landscapes in BC while still being only about an hour and a half from the nearest major airport.

Whether you’re local, craving a quiet mountain escape from the city or you’re travelling in for a destination elopement, the drive itself becomes part of the experience. The route along the Sea to Sky Highway is easily one of the most beautiful drives in the province, with ocean views, towering mountains, waterfalls, and forests unfolding around every corner.

2. The scenery in Squamish is expansive and varied

The landscapes in Squamish are beyond anything you could possibly imagine if you have not been here before. Within 5 to 20 minutes of the town centre you have access to the ocean, a number of lakes, rivers, and lush green forests. If you and your partner are looking to have an elopement rooted in nature and connection with one another, look no further than the accessible wilderness of Squamish.

3. Squamish is the adventure capital of Canada

Are you and your partner the outdoorsy adventurous types? Do you love hiking or biking together? Maybe your perfect date would consist of a sunrise paddle board on the ocean. In Squamish you could add any of your favourite adventures into your elopement day to make it the best day ever. If you can think of an adventurous outdoor activity there is a good chance that Squamish has it on offer. When planning your elopement day you need to remember that you can celebrate your day in any way you want to! Seriously! This day is about you and your love for one another so why not plan it in a way that would allow you two to have the most fun possible? Think about best day that you have had together. What were you doing? Let’s try to incorporate those activities into your elopement in Squamish.

4. The weather in Squamish is more mild than other mountainous areas

Mountain weather tends to be unpredictable throughout the year. In the winters you never know when a storm will arise, or a cold snap will roll in. In the summers it can get incredibly hot unless you are in the high alpine. But in Squamish the weather tends to stay a bit more mild and even keeled. The English name of the town “Squamish” can be loosely translated from the Indigenous name, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, meaning “Mother of the wind”. And it can certainly be windy here! But that wind coming up the fjord of Howe Sound makes for a more moderate climate year round. In Squamish we enjoy a reprieve from the dense summer heat with that wind, and in winter the valley tends to stay snow free, while the mountain peaks collect their white winter tops. This more mild weather makes Squamish an ideal location for outdoor elopements all through out the year.

5. There is no shortage of delicious foods to enhance your elopement day experience

Want to close out your elopement day with a delicious meal? Or a crisp cool beer? Squamish has you covered. We have 7 different breweries scattered throughout town, 5 of which serve food as well. These unique offerings are the perfect place to wrap up a day of adventuring, and celebrate your newly minted union with a cheers! One of my favourite spots to kick back and unwind after a day of adventuring is Backcountry Brewing where they make mind blowing pizzas and more beer varieties than you could possibility imagine.

So is Squamish the right place to plan your elopement?

If the above 5 points have not convinced you yet, then know that as a long time wedding and elopement photographer I throw my endorsement behind eloping in Squamish as well. The balance of accessibility and adventure is what makes Squamish one of my favourite places to recommend for couples looking for a BC elopement location with stunning views, fewer crowds, and meaningful outdoor experiences that can be tailored to almost any adventure level.
